Update: 4/1/07 – Please use the forums at Firedoodle for future bug reports. Thanks.

If you are using the Firedoodle Beta and run into problems, please note them in the comments here. Thanks! If you are interested in installing Firedoodle for the Firefox browser, visit Firedoodle.com. Additionally, I’ve create a demo video of using the add-on, which can be found here.

You should add the ability to include text notes in addition to highlights as can be seen in Fleck. That would make this web annotation extension complete.

It would also be nice to have a bookmarklet that activates the highlighting toolbar instead of it being there all the time.

  2. dsgdev Says:

I will be looking into both of those things Abhishek. Thanks for the input.

  3. Dan Says:

This looks like a cool tool, but it doesn’t appear to work for me. I am running Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. When I click the New button to start highlighting, the webpage becomes blank. All text and graphics disappear. Any ideas?

  4. dsgdev Says:

@Dan, I’ll have to try to find access to, or set up myself, the environment you are working in to test that out. If I find out anything, I’ll post it here. So far, I’ve only been able to test in OSX and XP

  5. MissNerd Says:

I have been waiting for this kind tool!! Thanks so much….! complain…. I use laptop and don’t have number key. numlock and number doesn’t work. any ideas?

  6. Todd Says:

I’m also encountering the blank page issue mentioned by Dan @7:51am. I’m running Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. If you can get it to work on Linux it will be a highly useful tool for our presentations and meetings, doubly so with the sharing option you mention. I second the request for text notations, too.

  7. Mike Says:

Please get it working on linux, It’s a great tool but only for windows.
    Otherwise It’s nice.

    Mike

  8. Kenny Says:

Looking forward to playing with this … one application that comes immediately to mind, if you haven’t yet considered it … would be the ability to share with others. Notes in the margin are often times for others.

There’s probably a host of copyright issues under that suggestion, but I’m thinking also in terms of designers or other teamwork projects where both parties aren’t in the same room. How much time do we waste detailing out those details in an Email or something when you could easily draw an arrow or add some notes in the margin.

Just a thought. Great concept. Kudos.

  9. lostsync Says:

    just tried to register.

1 – Error, insert query failed.
INSERT INTO users (id, username, email, password) VALUES (784, ‘lost.sync’, ‘lost.sync@domain.ext’, ’s0m3!goOd./p4$$w3rd’)

in addidtion to the registration failure, which i figure is either digg’s fault or the . in my usersname’s, as you can see the password is posted in the error message right there on the page, which isn’t very secure.

  10. Gerry Roe Says:

I’ve been using Diigo, Fleck, and I-lighter, for several weeks, and now FireDoodle. Each has features I wish could be combined into one tool. These include the ability to highlight text, the ability to annotate it via stickynotes, the ability to share the highlighting with others, and the ability to draw on the page. My application is editing other peoples’ papers, blogs, and websites.

  11. MM Says:

Running on windows, ff v 2.0.0.3, after a few seconds the flash app goes away, could be a conflict with the flashblock extension, but it still disappears on white-listed domains, so I’m not sure.

  12. Blake Lewis Says:

    thanks, ill try this one

  13. dsgdev Says:

@MissNerd, It’s not an actual key called “number”, it’s the keys 0-9 that change the color, if that’s what you mean. :)

@linux issues, It’s going to be a while before I have a chance to get to this… can one of you guys using linux do me a favor and and email me if you have some time to help me debug. mainly I will be asking for screen shots and copy of page source code. Just email me at dascgo@gmail.com if you’re willing.

@MM, I’ve noticed this on pages that are REALLY long. The flash, trying to scale to a short width, loooong height, goofs up. Was that the case when it happened to you?

@lostsync, I’m going to hash the password in the next release…

  14. stacy Says:

Hi.. the ‘doodling’ part isn’t working for me on OSX. I disabled all addons, still doesn’t work. Any ideas?

  15. stacy Says:

by the way, I just wanted to add that this is a FANTASTIC idea. It would be so incredibly useful for me since I like to ‘write’ (I remember things better when I physically write them down) and would love to use my tablet. I’ve been looking for things to turn me all digital instead of still using notebooks, and this could be one of those things.. have my fingers crossed that it’s just something stupid I’m doing that isn’t letting it work on OSX! :)

  16. dsgdev Says:

@stacy, the first two things I can think of is maybe you don’t have flash installed (probably not) or that it relates to my server switch (probably so). Check your flash installation, but more importantly go to firedoodle.com (without the www) and if the page comes up without the note about server problems, then you are looking at the right server and thus your install of firedoodle should be looking at the right place, too. The plugin gets it’s images, scripts, flash, from http://firedoodle.com, which has been slower to propagate around the web than http://www.firedoodle.com. I’m hoping that’s it.

If you are still having issues after trying that, let me know.

  17. stacy Says:

looks like everything *should* be ok (no notes about server problems). I have flash installed. i can add placemarks, but no doodling. :(

  18. dsgdev Says:

@stacy, can you post, or email me (dascgo @ gmail) the url you are trying to doodle on? have you tried it on google’s homepage (where I know it works) or any other site?

  19. stacy Says:

nevermind. I just reloaded and now have a note about server problems. ;)

  20. dsgdev Says:

@everyone, stacy just reminded me of something. If you go to a page and nothing seems to work, it may be because the page is cached. I don’t normally think of this, because I have my cache set to zero (for development purposes), but for most people that is not the case. If it doesn’t seem to work, refresh the page while holding “shift” so it gets a new copy of the code, thusly, allowing firedoodle to write it’s needed code to the page.

  21. stacy Says:

Looks like the domain has propogated here in ATL. Everything works great. Thanks for such a FANTASTIC extension!!! :D :D :D

  22. Kex Says:

Anyone else getting the problem where you try and log in with the right pass and user and it doesn’t log… >_> Maybe I’m just doing something wrong…Is there a way to ask for your information to be sent to your e-mail or no?

  23. dsgdev Says:

@Kex, I need to add that where you can request your password. Until then, email me a dascgo@gmail.com and I’ll send you your info.. make sure you use the email you signed up with. Thx

  24. Daniel Tome Says:

You can’t draw over a flash object (swf).
For example on your website firedoodle.com, try creating a new doodle and try drawing over the youtube video.

    - It’ll be great to get drawing over flash objects.
    - And Add text notes too :-)

    cheers

  25. huxley Says:

it’s a great tool. that’s exactly what i searched for.

but it does not support framesets, does it?! there’s no effect on our pages. unfortunately we use frames for our presentations and although want to use firedoodle. i know frames are obsolete according to w3c xhtml restrictions, but can’t you integrate this feature? maybe take the frame that has marked text.

  26. Abx Says:

    I can’t save because I’m not logged in, I can’t login because I’m not registered, I can’t register because it says I’m allready registered!!! What’s up?? :D

Does it work with local websites?

    Great work, thank for it!!

  27. Abx Says:

If I start a new Highlight and i close the tab without save or cancel the current Highlight, the Highlight tool hangs

  28. dsgdev Says:

I’m going to try to start a proper forum for Firedoodle problems soon, hopefully tonight. This way we can better communicate bout various issues.

@Abx, delete any cookies in your browser for Firedoodle.com and then you should be able to register. I’ll also look into the hanging issue. Yes, it should work with a local webiste… any HTML you load in a browser should work.

@huxley, I need to check on the frames issue. I know it can handle iframes, but I’ll see what I can do about regular frames.

@Daniel, I’ll look into the drawing over flash issues, and notes are coming soon.
